History of mehndi/henna

The word mehndi is derived from the Sanskrit word mendhika. Mehndi is the art of creating designs on the skin using henna paste. These designs can be applied in different parts of the body.Mehandi, also known as henna is a temporary form of skin decoration in mainly India and Nepal. People in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives as well as by expatriate communities from those countries also use Mehandi. This tradition also spread to exist among some Arab Women particularly the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf nationals. Traditionally mehndi is applied on the hands and feet. Today as mehndi has become popular in the West mehndi is applied on the upper arms, back, around the belly button and on the hands and feet.Mehndi was introduced to India in the 12th century, by the Mughals. At first, it was only used by the rich and ruling families. It can be used to dye hair skin and clothes, even finger nails and has long been used as a treatment for sunburn, for its astringent qualities and also as a sedative.  Also known as Mehndi.Eventually, it was liked and used by everyone. As more people started using mehndi, the recipes and patterns became more refined. In 13th and 14th century Persian art women and dancers were displayed with henna painted hands. Arabian countries used mehndi for its cooling properties. Muslims used mehndi since the beginning of Islam. Even Prophet Muhammad colored his bear and hair with mehndi. Henna designs have traditionally fallen into four different styles. The Middle Eastern style is mostly made up of floral patterns similar to the Arabic textiles, paintings and carvings and do not usually follow a destinctive pattern. Egyptians used mehndi to dye the hair and fingernails of their dead, over 5000 years ago.Mehendi tattooing substitute for those who fear too much poking needle tolerated.
